For the first time in my life, I wish my phone had a camera on it. I was visiting a friend in Auburn and passed by the "Naruto Cafe." I saw the sign and thought, no, this has to just be an unfortunate naming coincidence. Then when I could clearly see the front of the store, I realized that they had anime on the front of it. That was where we ate dinner.

In other news I saw The Men Who Stare at Goats. I highly recommend this. Just get a better theater. Ours cut the movie short close to the end and showed large parts of the ending out of order with no sound multiple times before finally getting fixed. Really the movie is good. George Clooney's agent is the best damn agent in hollywood. While Jackie Chan and Matt Damon are making bad movies to get paid, Clooney is still working with amazing scrips.

I have just remade my UGA account since my old one has been deleted due to inactivity. Haven't used it, yet still waiting in my inbox is a phishing spam telling me that my bank account may have been activated from another computer.

This call out goes out to spam: Thank you spam! Without you, there wouldn't be anything in the world that is efficient.

I had this huge rant about Ruby Tuesdays, but since the car ride home and booting up the computer I have kind of lost the moment. This is going to be like a Lewis Black sketch where he is moderately disgusted.

Ruby Tuesday's not too long ago underwent a change to become a more up-scale restaurant from its old theme which was the same as Applebee's and Chili's (including the fucking possessive name). They obviously did this because they were easily able to compete in the 'family friendly neighborhood bar and grill' market. Oh wait, that makes no since at all, they must have been failing. Now who am I to question the marketing department of a multi-million dollar business, oh right fucking common sense. I barely watch TV, I only listen to the radio in the car, and nearly every day I see an ad for Applebee's or Chili's, yet I never see anything from Ruby Tuesdays. Just maybe this had a part in why they weren't doing so well.

While we are talking about commercials, lets talk about the only Ruby Tuesdays commercial I can ever recollect seeing: the one where they talk about their change. Some guy pops up, grabs a tiffany lamp, says "the 70's called, they want their lamp back," and replaces it with an even uglier lamp from the 80's. Fuck people, what endured about the 80's? That's a trick question. Remember that episode of Futurama, "Why is everyone wearing rings?" "Because rings are ugly, duh!" Quality was not what endured about the 80's, but that didn't stop the redesign of Ruby Tuesdays. For everything that looks decent inside, it is right next to something that wasn't burned in the 90's. Bad taste, just not as bad as an 80's themed restaurant where your server is dressed as MC Hammer. Wait, fuck this, that would be awesome, I wish my waitress had been Dee Schneider.

About the redesign. They took all of the crap off the walls, they gave the tables plainer setting, and all of the dishes are square. That's it, that's all they did. They also increased the prices. We may joke about upscale restaurants charging more because of the dish ware, but they didn't change the food so we are really playing more just for the fucking square dishes. Now lets go over this again, they went through a whole big thing about how they were changing the restaurant and they didn't change the food. The same overpriced burgers that have no flavor so they cover it up with tons of mayonnaise and ketchup, the same over-seasoned pre-frozen fries that are completely outclassed by McDonald's, the same tortilla chips and flavorless dip, the same seafood mash-ups that cause you to forget the taste of real seafood, the same salad-bar, a fucking salad bar, what self-respecting restaurant has a salad-bar? Are you trying to hint that you are on par with Cici's and Ryan's? Actually I'd rather go to either one of those.

Lets talk about the other big thing they didn't change, the layout. It still has just as many tables, so the whole place is crowded as fuck. On top of these otherwise fine looking settings are those obnoxious special and drink advertisements. Then as you sit down they hand you the same over-sized, over-colored menus and that dining room just got about twice as crowded.

Before when I said that I wish my server was Dee Schneider, I really did mean it. While it is common practice to keep young servers and more commonly women, these servers were a bit too young, high-school young. They weren't even attractive. Well there was one that was okay, but some were the type you try to avoid looking at. A couple of them were pregnant. Wait, hold on here. Lets get a bunch of unattractive, pregnant sixteen year olds as the wait staff, this is clearly an amazing business plan! Why has no one thought of this before? Oh wait, Waffle House already has.

I've been watching Eastwick.

I like this show, but. I like the characters, I like the writing, but damn are those girls dumb. Tall, dark, and mysterious walks into town, changes everything, they all acknowledge that everything went weird as soon as he entered, that he gives everyone a bad vibe, that everytime he suggests something it works out for him and not the girls, that he himself says he is bad, and yet time after time after time they go back to him for advice. One of them is a reporter who has evidence that he has a stolen identity and yet even she is going to him for advice while she is investigating him.

There is something here that I like, but I am banging my head constantly at all of the stupid shit that they are doing.

Okay I took a step back from it and realized exactly what it is about this show that I like. Its three hot girls that are constantly drinking.

Not too long ago I watched Surrogates. It was ok, nothing that great. We now have the ability for you to lay in bed at home and interact with the world through a remote body (the surrogate). It took 14 years for this to catch on and everyone is doing it, I mean every single person. Okay military application, expected; law enforcement and emergency response services, not surprising; the desk clerk that sits on a computer and files all day, wat? Not one person leaves their house, they have their surrogates do that for them.

The thing I just don't really like about this movie is how poorly it follows in the tradition of scifi movies asking philosophical questions. Normally such a movie sets up the situation and that's it. This movie sets up the situation then answers the question. Just like AI, Will Smith was running around the whole time yelling that robots are dangerous; well no shit, other than Short Circuit every other movie about robots has them going crazy and/or taking over the world. The moment when the rest of the world goes "holy shit, the robots are attacking, how is that possible?", we just can't relate.

Sick of the trend of new scifi movies to set up a philosophical question, then quickly answer it. What is the fucking point?

I hate it when I find something so hilarious that I want to share it, but no one else will get the joke.

Back in 2005 the UGA concert choir toured England/Scotland. While in Scotland we went to a touristy place off of Loch Lomond. There they had a giant movie room where they showed a movie about the Loch. You know those type of places, you know those type of movies; we made fun of that movie for years later. Somehow that movie ended up on hulu.

Also I just discovered hulu. Holy shit. Too much anime, but holy shit.

Oh my.

I've been on the fence about whether or not I liked Glee, until this part.

During a football game

"Hey left tackle, your mother's so fat her cereal bowl comes with its own lifeguard, like baywatch."

"Hey anklegrabber, I had sex with your mother. No seriously, I cleaned your pool, then I had sex with her in your bed. Nice Star Wars sheets."

Remember RLS, Restless Leg Syndrome? You know where you legs move while you try to sleep. Yeah we have a pill for that.

Are your eyelashes not long enough? Well lucky you now we have a pill for that"

EDIT: Okay sorry I guess its a gel. Of course silly a "pill" can't do that, its a fucking gel. Of course as the body absorbs whatever shit is put on it, method of administration only really affects onset time.

My Grandfather is back in the hospital. This isn't exactly new, he has been having several problems for the past few months. Today they upgraded his cancer to terminal. One of the doctors, one that we do not like for these type of reasons, walked in on him today, with no consulting of his primary doctor, nor consulting the rest of the family and told him to look into hospice and that he would probably only last through Christmas.

My Grandfather had been particularly depressed lately. He used to do everything himself, home maintenance, remodeling, auto maintenance, etc. He broke him arm a couple months back trying to do what he normally did. He was forced to not move around much at all and it had put him in a terrible slump. He is of the old generation that just doesn't see how psychological health can greatly affect one's physical health. The new today, as such as it was presented put him into a worse depression than I've ever seen him in.

Later my uncle told the story of how he won the bronze star in Vietnam. He's never told that story to anyone, not even his wife.

I went to a family reunion Saturday. I hate reunions on that side of the family.

I don't dislike anyone there, but its hard to express my dissatisfaction without it coming across as such. That whole side is incredibly boring. These are the people that keep Survivor and American Idol high in the ratings. These are the people that vote for their respective political parties without any thought of their own. This year we had a sharing of "wild" stories. Until my cousin in the army spoke up, the wildest stories were 'I threw a cherry bomb and started a small fire' and 'I egged a car.'

The fake laugh. I hope it was a fake laugh. We got there early to help some of the setup and a few of the members started to force through some jokes and comments that were not really that funny at all. Of course every one of them got the fake laugh response.

The small talk. This I cannot stand. There is a generational gap as well as a large technological gap between me and everyone else there. The forced conversation goes "How are you? Where are you living now? What are you doing?" "Well at 26 I just moved back in with my parents. I am getting into a huge depression from not having any leads on work for over eight months. And I'm stuck in a rut where things just seem to keep getting worse, so any day you see me is the worst day I'm having. Thanks for remind me. "I'm fine."

You know the group of guys that go off to throw a baseball/football/Frisbee all day and you can't understand how it can be entertaining for that long? Well it isn't, they are doing it just to avoid the awkward conversation.

I'm no longer a kid and it is becoming clear to me that in a few years I'm going to be that uncle at the reunion. Is it that surprising that I don't care for these?

I haven't really been around for a bit.

My powersupply went out and it took my motherboard with it.

The good news is that I'm getting an RMA on the motherboard (also on a harddrive that went out on me a year back or so). The bad news is that it looks like its going to be another couple of weeks before it gets back and I get everything together.

Well so I finally got in touch with the company in North Alpharetta that I was interviewing for a job. A week ago last Thursday they said they would respond. This is the same company that pushed the interview forward twice because someone was out of the office.

Nope, didn't get it.

And I was actually looking forward to it. Looking forward to a 60hr/wk job for 18K a year no benefits. If that was hourly it would be straight up $6/hr, if I was working hourly I'd have 20 of overtime, so a total of 70 hours and at that the pay would be ~$5.143/hr just less than minimum wage. I was looking forward to working for less than minimum wage. This of course means they found someone more qualified that was willing to work for that.

Fuck everything.

Ashes to Ashes [Mar. 28th, 2009|11:24 am]
Okay this isn't exactly a brand new show, but it is airing for the first time on BBCAmerica. Sequel to Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes new character, same premise. A life threatening experience (being shot in the head) sends her back in time to 1981.

Other than the main character, everyone else is stereotypical 1980's and this show has that campy Miami Vice (Brittonic Vice?) feel to just about everything. After watching a couple of episodes I have realized a couple of things. 1. I love the 80's, I freaking love them. 2. I am falling in love with Montserrat Lombard.

Watch this show, its good.

I only ever seem to catch TV when I am at my folk's place. Caught the new show Castle; its a crime drama with an author following around a detective. Also starring Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame.

I think it is a good premise and some of the writing is good, but a lot of the characters were poorly designed and poorly cast. Castle's mother never appeared sober or without a drink in her hand, way over the top even for the "alcoholic former-actress past her prime." Castle's daughter is supposed to be 13 or so, but she is mature far beyond her years and comes off as 18 or older. The police chief seems to be a throwback to the 80's or 90's and comes off as an easily manipulated, buffoon who cannot think for himself.

But what is going to kill the show is that the second biggest character, the female detective is weak. She looks pretty, not attractive mind you, but going out for the evening pretty. She looks like she would reapply her makeup while chasing a suspect. She is the only official police officer present during most of the events and she is regularly outdone by Castle, playing into her being weak and incompetent. She is hands down the weakest female character in any of the crime dramas and putting her against a strong character like Castle makes her feel like a side kick, when she is the one supposed to be an officer.

In further thought I wish the writing/casting were better because this is the perfect crime drama. Or perhaps I should say this is the culmination of our television being saturated with crime dramas. At one point when all the police are stumped, Castle proposed an off-the-wall hypothesis of what happened which in terns gets them investigating in the right places; prettymuch what one would expect given the setup. However what got me was one of Castle's lines in response to how he came up with that theory, "No reason other than it made a good story, your theories were boring." No you see this is it. That attitude and advice is one of the worst suggestions for legitimate investigation, but it is the single best advice for investigating a 'crime drama.' This is why I love this show.

So catch the show while you can, it certainly isn't going to be on long.
